Cold, dry landscapes with ground-level vegetation
The tundra biome is characterized by extremely cold temperatures, low precipitation levels, and vegetation such as grasses, mosses, and lichens. This biome occupies the smallest percentage of global land area with the lowest contribution to global food calories and the second lowest contribution to carbon storage. Tundra contributes the third lowest percentage to protected area and the fourth highest percentage to key biodiversity area.
